LAB 1 WRITE-UP

Independent and Dependent Variables

The independent variable, the variable that is being manipulated on the x - axis, is the amount of Lipopolysaccharide in mg.

10mg, 8mg, 6mg, 4mg, and 0mg are the increments being measured.

The dependent variable, the variable that is being affected by the independent variable on the y - axis, is the change in levels of inflammation in affected areas.

Experimental Design

Groups
There will be five groups and 50 people in each group. The groups will be 10mg, 8mg, 6mg, 4mg, and 0mg. The control group will be 10mg, and the placebo group will be 0mg.

Age
The age of the subjects will be mainly those who are age 60 and older. Age 60 - 65 is the universally accepted age in most developed countries.

Number of subjects per group
There will be 50 subjects in each group.

Subject Selection

Select an SRS of 250 eligible elderly people. Assign each a number between 001-250. Use a random integer generator computer system to choose 50 people in each group (10 mg, 8mg, 6mg, 4mg, and 0mg.)

Sources of Error and Bias

Some sources of error/bias could include; other drugs the subject may be taking, diet, sleeping patterns, physical activity, weight vs. the drug intake, allergies and the placebo effect.
