LAB 3A WRITE-UP

Descriptive Statistics

Spree temperature:

-Mean: 99.27 degrees

-Standard Deviation: 1.35 degrees

Thermometer:

-Mean: 97.26 degrees

-Standard Deviation: 1.17 degrees

Spree heart rate:

-Mean: 88.31

-Standard Deviation: 22.96

Pulse Ox:

-Mean: 88.92 beats/minute

-Standard Deviation: 23.20 beats/minute

Results

Pearson’s R:

1) The oral thermometer and Spree Band: R=0.0142

2) The pulse ox and the Spree Band: R=.8233

T-test:

1) The oral thermometer and Spree Band: p=7.57E-82 This p-value is less than the alpha value of a= 0.5, thus there is statistical significance here.

2) The pulse ox and the Spree Band: p=.718 This p-value is greater than the alpha value of a=.5, thus there is no statistical significance.

Analysis

graph of spree band vs thermometer

graph of spree band vs pulse ox

The calculation of Pearson's R value between the oral thermometer and Spree Band was 0.0142 while Pearson's R value for the correlation between the pulse ox and the Spree Band was .8233. The low R value between the oral thermometer and the Spree Band indicates a poor positive relationship between the two groups of data while the high R value between the pulse ox and the Spree Band indicates a strong positive relationship between these two groups of data.

The calculation of the p-value through utilizing an unpaired t-test between the oral thermometer and Spree Band resulted in the value of 7.57E-82 (statistically speaking, zero). Because this p-value is less than the alpha value of a=0.05, there was statistical significance between the two groups of data. This means that the observed relationship between the two groups of data was unlikely to have occurred by chance. The calculation of the p-value through utilizing an unpaired t-test between the pulse ox and Spree Band resulted in the value of .718. Because this p-value is higher than the alpha value of a=0.05, there was no statistical significance between the two groups of data. This means that the observed relationship between the two groups of data was likely to have occurred by chance.

Summary/Discussion

The spree headband does not accurately measure heart rate and temperature respectively, although it comes decently close to the heart rate measurement compared to the pulse ox, it is still not accurate enough to be considered a valid form of measurement. For its temperature feature, it measured the temperature very far off from the thermometer but it had a p value that indicated that it was very statistically significant signifying that the results are very unlikely to be by chance. I believe this is because the spree band was very precise in measuring temperature, but not exactly accurate since it did not give a scale of temperature exactly but instead gave a scale of 1 to 4. Also the thermometer was not entirely accurate because of the sleeve that was put on it. often it would read temperatures much lower than my internal temperature. We know this because if my temperature was 94 degrees I would most likely be going into hypothermic shock and not feeling completely fine as I was. Some of the main design flaws were the way that temperature was recorded in terms of 1 through 4 instead of the standard unit of degrees Fahrenheit. Also the band could have been made more aesthetically pleasing along with possibly being located somewhere other than the forehead. Bluetooth connectivity also could have been improved by making it show up on bluetooth as something other than just Spree and rather some form of identification to separate it from others of the same.

Issues:

• Bluetooth connectivity

• Only able to connect through the app

• Forehead placement looked gaudy

• Inaccurate temperature and heart rate readings

• May be influenced by external temperatures

• Bluetooth killed the battery

• Temperature in terms of levels

• Bluetooth killing the battery faster

• Ability to clean device

Recommendations:

• Connecting to the device from Bluetooth in addition to in-app

• Sensor placement (is the forehead necessary?)

• Using a fabric band instead of a rubber band

• Having the device easily washed or cleaned

• Temperature in terms of degrees, not gauges

Target Population and Need

The target population is defined, by not limited to, three groups: Those who suffer from anxiety, PTSD, or asthma. The American population of which is 3.3 million, 5.2 million, and 22 million, respectively.

Need: Those who suffer from anxiety and PTSD also suffer from anxiety attacks because of their respective conditions. The watch monitors the signs of an impending anxiety attack, including: a low blood oxygen level (from shortness of breath), an increased heart rate, and a high sweat rate as well. Once the watch has gathered data necessary to conclude that the wearer is suffering from an anxiety attack, the wearer is prompted by the watch to go through steps necessary to calm down and exercises used to reduce anxiety. The watch saves the data from the anxiety attack, allowing the wearer to monitor the attacks in order to find what is triggering the attacks or where and when they are occurring.

Those who suffer from asthma need to monitor their blood oxygen levels in order to prevent incoming asthma attacks. Thus, the watch (using technology similar to a pulse oximeter) monitors the blood oxygen level watching for shortness of breath and other irregularities in the oxygen levels. Once the watch has gathered enough data to conclude that there is a chance of an asthma attack occurring, the wearer is prompted by the watch to go through exercises which allow for the expansion of the lungs for a higher intake of oxygen, and to take prescribed medicine.

For all of the populations above, a need may arise for emergency medical attention. Thus, the watch includes a button on the side that, when pressed for 4 seconds, contacts emergency services.

In order to assess customer needs with design requirements, a problem understanding form was created.

Device Design

The device that was designed was a watch that monitors heart rate, stark differences in blood oxygen content, sweat rate Sweat rate is calculated as A. pre-exercise body weight-post exercise body weight in ounces; B. Fluid consumed during exercise in ounces; C. Exercise Duration in hours

sweat rate= (A=B)/C)

Watch: -Useful for those who suffer from PTSD and anxiety attacks -Sensor on the underside of the watch that measures heart rate (close to the pulse on the wrist) -Measures blood oxygen level (has a probe on the underside which houses a light source, a light detector on the other side of the watch, and a microprocessor which compares and calculates the differences in the oxygen rich versus oxygen poor hemoglobin) -Sweat rate (input standard weight information into the watch, in the case of an anxiety attack, a heightened heart rate and lowered blood oxygen level will prompt the watch to ask the user for current weight, length of anxiety attack, and how much fluid has been consumed-if any.) -Button on the side for calling 911
