LAB 1 WRITE-UP

Independent and Dependent Variables

Independent Variable: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)
Dependent: Inflammotin

Experimental Design

Groups
12 groups (11 experimental, 1 control) For experimental groups: start at 5 mg of LPS for first group, and increase by 1 mg for each group until 15 mg is reached. Control group receives 0 mg of LPS

Age

Ages ranging between 65-85 years in age

Number of subjects per group
10 subjects per group ( 5 female and 5 male)
Randomly distributed amongst race, age (between 65-85), weight, height, body-mass index, etc.

Subject Selection

Firstly, each of the subjects will need to be randomly selected. Make sure that subjects have limited allergies. Make sure that they do no take any anti-inflammatory medications. Also make sure that each of the subjects are on an anti-inflammatory diet, and that their amount of physical activity is limited. The subjects selected will also have to be generally healthy with no adverse pre-existing conditions.

Sources of Error and Bias

Once again a source of error could be the diet of the subjects, so the control will be the anti-inflammatory diet. The amount of physical activity or exercise can also have an effect on inflammation, so this will need to be limited in the subjects. Also any pre-existing conditions will need to be taken into account.
