Analysis

A t-test was used to determine the significance for both of these experiments, because there were only two sets of data for each experiment to compare: the Spree data and the Gold data. The data was paired, because the same subject was used throughout the experiments. Also, the data was two-tailed, because there was no prediction of direction of experimental effects. Then, a Pearson's R correlation was included in order to demonstrate a linear relationship between each data set.

Temperature Analysis

The t-test showed that the temperature data was significant, meaning that the Spree data was closely correlated with the Gold data. The temperature data from the Spree device is probably accurate, according to the significant t-test.

Heart Rate Analysis

The t-test showed that the heart rate data was significant, meaning that the Spree data was closely correlated with the Gold data. The heart rate data from the Spree device is probably accurate, according to the significant t-test.

Summary/Discussion

Overall, the Spree is a great device in theory only. The Spree fitness head-band is a poorly designed device with a confusing user interface, and it fails at one of the basic tasks that it is advertised to do. The design flaws that are holding the spree back from reaching its potential are:

  1. User Interface
    • The Spree device has a companion app for the iPhone. This app has a user-friendly display, and it is easy to read and plug in information. However, the way the information from the Spree sensory device is displayed is very difficult to read.
    • The body temperature and heart rate data is shown through the use of bars and colors. Heart rate and body temperature are measured with four colors each.

Blue = Level 1, Yellow = Level 2, Red = Level 3, Red 2 = Level 4

  1. Data Analysis
    • The data that is sent from the Spree sensor device to the app is shown only in ranges based on color. The problem with this is that the range of numbers for each level is unknown, and the user is not given an exact number. The data is not accurately analyzed by the Spree sensor, and it prevents the user from receiving an accurate reading.
  2. Connectivity to Phone
    • The spree device is easy to set-up; however, when it comes time to actually pair the sensor with the app, the Spree fails. It takes too long for the Spree sensor to connect with the app. In order for the Spree sensor to pair with the app, the user has to put the Spree headband on, and then the user has to walk around while they wait for the Spree sensor to recognize that they are exercising. Then, in order for the sensor to stay connected to the app, the user has to continuously keep moving in order for their sensor to stay activated.

Ways to improve the Spree fitness device:

  • Re-develop the sensor to accurately read body temperature and heart rate and display the reading with actual numbers instead of a level/color system
  • Incorporate better Bluetooth technology into the spree sensor so that it links up with the app, so that it connects faster and stays connected more reliably
  • Another necessary improvement to the Spree device would be to lower the cost to allow a larger consumer base

Target Population and Need

Our device is targeted at the general adult population of the United States, which is 76.0% of the population. The United States is a very unhealthy country with one of the highest obesity rates and one of the lowest life expectancy rates among all wealthy and developed countries. So, there is a strong need for a medical device that is able to monitor the health of an individual specifically pertaining to body temperature, heart rate, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other causes of disease. The importance of a device that can monitor all causes of disease is to increase the general well-being of the adult population in the United States.
