LAB 1 WRITE-UP

Independent and Dependent Variables

The dosage of inflammatory inducing agent (lipopolysaccharide) is the independent variable, the inflammotin is the dependent variable.

Experimental Design

Groups

4 groups; 0 mg group, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg;

0 mg group will serve as a placebo control group, the 10 mg group will be a control based on previous data, 5mg and 7.5mg will be the experimental trial groups.

Age

70-80

While there is a large population between the ages of 70 and 80, the experiment is geared towards the elderly, making subject selection easier.

Number of subjects per group

10

We have a limited budget but we still want randomization, replicates, and variability in our results.

Subject Selection

Must be between the ages of 70 and 80 years old, no recent traumatic injuries, no major health issues that increase inflammation in the body i.e. no arthritis, heart disease etc. In a healthy weight range for their age/height. Equal amount of female and male subjects.

Sources of Error and Bias

Sources of error: variability in age, genetics, medical history, environmental factors, current medications, gender, current medical issues, weight/height, source of subject selection, human error in testing and production of medication.
