About Pilot Time CAMRI is supported by user fees: PIs receive grants or contracts and then pay CAMRI for MR scanner time on a fee for service basis. To encourage new investigators and projects, pilot time awards are available. The purpose of the pilot time is to allow for collection of preliminary data for new grant applications that will then be used to pay for regularly priced scan time at CAMRI. Pilot Time for Existing Users For users who currently scan at CAMRI, pilot time hours are granted based on the amount of paid scanner time used at a ratio of 5 to 1. For every 5 hours of paid scanner time, the user receives one hour of free pilot time. Because off-hours scanning is half-price, the amount of pilot time received is also half as much (for every 10 hours of paid off-hours scanner time, the user receives one hour of free pilot time.) No pilot time is awarded for phantom scanning. In general, existing user pilot time expires at the end of each fiscal year but up to 10 hours of unused pilot time can roll over to the next fiscal year. Pilot Time for New Users For PIs who have never before scanned at CAMRI, a brief application is required, consisting of the following: Number of scanner hours requested in order to collect preliminary data for the grant proposal (maximum of 10 hours). Applicant name and NIH-format biosketch or full CV Title of grant that you are preparing and outline, in the form of an NIH-format specific aims page Funding agency and mechanism for which the grant will be submitted (e.g. NIH R21; URL of RFA if non-NIH) Applicant's role on grant (PI, co-investigator, consultant, etc.) The number of scanner hours budgeted in the grant and the duration of the project (if funded) Submit completed applications or questions to camri@bcm.edu. Notes Before data collection can begin, the PI must attend all necessary training and submit required documentation, including an IRB-approved protocol and consent form. Click here for an IRB proposal template. The minimum duration of a pilot scan session is one hour and there is no additional discount for scanning after-hours. Pilot time awards are limited to one per investigative team: different investigators on the same team may not apply for separate pilot awards.
