BECKMAN AVANTI CENTRIFUGE

Rules and Guidelines

BEFORE USE:

1. New user MUST be trained by the captain or present users

2. ALWAYS add info in logbook.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

1. You must be fluent in the principals and use of centrifuges before using this instrument. See you RA (first) or the equipment captain (second) if you are not.

2. Short instructions on how to use these centrifiges are on the centrifuge cover.

3. These machines will run Beckman or Fiberlite brand rotors, the fiberlite ones are lighter and quicker to use.

REMINDERS:

1. Check (and clean if necessary) the rotor and centrifuge before and after each run.

2. Always use a balance to balance your tubes, never "eyeball" the tubes.

3. Always assume the cap may leak and underfill the tube. To determine the failsafe level hold the tube at the complementary angle (complement of the angle it is in the rotor) and fill until water flows out of the tube. This is your max. fill volume.

4. Remain with the 'fuge until it comes up to speed.

5. When removing your samples check to see if they leaked. If so clean the rotor and centrifuge. If an O-ring broke replace it and clean the centrifuge.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Extra O-rings are located in the clear drawers over the centrifuges.

Beckman SpinKote: In drawers over 'fuges. Use a dab on spindle/cover lockdown threads to allow easy installation and removal of covers/rotors.

Vacuum grease: Use a dab on new or "dry" O-rings.

The vacuum timer and rotor speed must be at zero before the door can be opened.

BECKMAN ROTOR USE

HOW TO USE:

1. Beckman brand rotors will work in any Beckman centrifuge. Select the proper rotor:

2. Make sure the rotor doesn't have any liquid or other residue in it before you load it.

3. Check that both O-rings are intact, replace if necessary.

4. Balance your tubes with an electronic balance and do not overfill, assume the cap might leak and fill to the proper height with this in mind.

5. Load tubes in rotor, balance the laod.

6. Attaching the lid to rotor also attaches the rotor to the 'fuge spindle. Lock the lid and rotor down the the one knob, check to see that the lid is tight.

7. Complete your run as appropriate.

8. When removing your samples check to see if they leaked. If so clean the rotor and centrifuge. If an O-ring broke replace it and clean the centrifuge.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Extra O-rings are located in the clear drawers over the centrifuges.

O-rings are for specific rotors, select the proper ones for each rotor. Both O-rings must be in good shape or 1. your saples can outgas, 2. a broken/leaking tube will make a bigger mess than it needs to.

Beckman SpinKote: In drawers over 'fuges. Use a dab on spindle/cover lockdown threads to allow easy installation and removal of covers/rotors.

Vacuum grease: Use a dab on new or "dry" O-rings.
