Summary

The Sherline lathe is a small-scale hobbyists lathe that can be used for turning objects to a medium degree of precision.

Basic Operation

The lathe is the optimal method of working with cylindrical objects that require some symmetry about the axis of the piece. Drilling, facing, or chamfering are a few of the machining methods that can be done on the lathe.

Tooling

  • Carbide facing tools
  • Carbide finishing points
  • Boring tools
  • Parting tool

Lessons Learned

  • Tapering can be performed by angling the headstock. Loosen the bolt near the angle indicator and remove the small bar to turn the headstock to the side
  • The Sherline has significant backlash. Keep this in mind when you are turning.
