Notes for July 12, 2010

  • Things to consider for today/this week
  1. Look at perspectives articles as examples to guide writing style for reuse piece.
  2. Search ISI again using the DOI prefixes from Pangaea (10.1594/PANGAEA/*) and ORNL DAAC (10.3334/ORNLDAAC/*) to be certain that the DOI cannot be found this way.
  3. Look at Sarah's tags in her shared fields spreadsheet and discuss to find ways of creating a solid standard criteria for evaluating level of reuse.
  4. For meeting tomorrow, look through spreadsheet and ask others if fields need clarification, could be expanded, condensed or are not needed.

Searches for Pangaea DOI prefix in ISI

  1. Search terms: Topic=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: 1 (doi:10.1029/2009GC002611) Text from abstract: "The same is true for the frequency truncation method, which uses Fourier transformation to decompose the curve into its frequency components before counting positive and negative passages. The algorithms are available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.729700."
  2. Search terms: Title=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: Your search (shown below) found no records.
  3. Search terms: Author=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: Your search (shown below) found no records.
  4. Search terms: Group Author=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: Your search (shown below) found no records.

  7. Search terms: Year Published=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: Search Error: Invalid use of truncation. (this is pretty much what I expected, but figure I should log it anyway)
  8. Search terms: Address=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: Your search (shown below) found no records.
  9. (fields "Language" and "Document Type" had dropdown menu as opposed to freetext search)
  10. Search terms: Funding Agency=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: Your search (shown below) found no records.
  11. Search terms: Grant Number=(10.1594/PANGAEA/*) Timespan=All Years. Databases=SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI Results: Your search (shown below) found no records. (once again, I expected this, but figured I should try anyway)

Observations

  • Valerie Enriquez 12:44, 12 July 2010 (EDT): While it wasn't completely impossible to find an article by searching for the DOI prefix with a wildcard for Pangaea and ORNL DAAC in ISI Web of Science Basic Search, it still confirmed my idea that ISI is constructed more to find articles and article citations and not data citations, as the fields reflect publication: Topic/Title/Author/Group Author/Editor/Address/Language/Document Type/Funding Agency/Grant Number.
The one article I found had the DOI prefix in the abstract of the article instead of the usual places (methods, results, discussion) and appears to be a deposit article (where the authors of the article deposited the data into the repository for sharing as opposed to downloading it for reuse). This search was conducted through the "topic" field, so I might be able to deduce that the "topic" search includes abstract text. I feel that perhaps a fulltext search may be useful for this particular purpose. However, I am very interested to see what Thomson Reuters and Elsevier are working on with ANDS for searching articles for data citations.
  • Valerie Enriquez 18:28, 12 July 2010 (EDT): As per chat with Heather, will wait until tomorrow before making any drastic changes to my current spreadsheets (such as three suggested headings for the types of search strategy with a "1" for if the article was found using the strategy and "0" if the article was not found using that strategy). However, it may be useful to run through the 27 iterations of searches again at a more specific level to try to find articles with specific citations for datasets as opposed to the general searches like the DOI prefix or repository name.
