Stanford Training Requirements

After you get your web access to Stanford, log-in to axess.

Choose the STARS (Training) tab

Complete

  • EHS-4200-WEB General Safety & Emergency Preparedness
  • EHS-1500-WEB Biosafety

Log into the red BIOSAFETY binder on Elizabeth's desk, under the Training Info tab, name and date of Biosafety Training on appropriate page.

Our lab meeting point in case of an emergency is in the plaza behind Coupa Cafe.

Building and Lab Access

After you get an ID card,

  • Contact Elizabeth to arrange for Y2E2 building access.

There is a keycard access point on the courtyard side of the red atrium. You will need your card after 6PM weekdays and all weekend. Additionally, keycard access is required in the elevator and the stairway door in the red atrium for after-hours security. Please, never leave the building or stairwell doors propped open on weekends.

  • Ask for the keycode for the lab, B07 door.

This door can be a problem for the newcomer! If you are having trouble opening the door, you are probably pushing down on the handle too quickly after entering the code. Listen carefully for the lock noise or try counting ONE, TWO, then Turn handle down. Wait for it to reset if you have to retry.

  • For emergency access to the lab in case something happens to the keypad door, a key is provided in a lockbox in the hallway, next to the lab door by the washroom. Ask for the code. This key also works the door at B17. Always return the key to the lockbox!

Ordering Supplies

Endy lab ordering is a community effort.

  • General supplies for the lab, tubes, gloves etc., are maintained by Elizabeth. If you find something is low or empty please point this out to her for restocking. Ask Elizabeth to invite you to the Endy Group Purchasing page for a detailed list of general supplies.
  • Specific reagents and supplies may be ordered directly by YOU, and are generally your responsibility! Ask Elizabeth to invite you to the Endy Group Purchasing page. Here you will need to fill in columns A to H with your item, cat number, appx cost and vendor. Jean Cookingham will place the orders and fill in the rest. Priority code is loosly: A-Quickly, B-Sometime Soon, C-Next time there is an order for the is vendor. If the item is urgently needed, fill in request and contact Jean via email to make sure she can place ASAP.
  • Stanford also has BioStores (www.stanford.edu/dept/BioSci/) and PhysicsStores (www.stanford.edu/dept/physics/facilities/stockroom.html). Ask Drew to be added as a user. BioStores has many commonly used items, ask to go along with someone for a tour next time they go. Note: Biostores is closed between 12 and 1 daily.

Glassware, Culture Tubes, Washroom Info and Autoclave Directions

Glassware is located in B07B. Culture Tubes are located above the ice machine in the washroom, B07A, two sizes are available.

Tuesdays, Elizabeth makes LB and/or LB Agar; both are kept in the cabinet in the chemical room, B07B; batches are coded. Agar can be melted in the microwave. Ask someone with experience about the settings. If you want to keep the Agar molten so you can pour plates, there is a water bath, by the wall in bay C (Jerome and Francois). Turn it on when needed and turn off when not in use to avoid evaporation. There are also ring weights for the flask necks there. Recipes and prep follow.
