## Welcome to Advanced Experimental Chemistry## Today's ProcedureMaking PVOH/Glutaraldehyde/Phenol Films: 1) Fill 5 50mL beakers with 15mL HPLC water. Place on hot/stir plates in the hood. 2) Measure out 1g of PVOH (5 times) and place into the 5 beakers (1g each). Allow PVOH to begin dissolving on hot/stir plates. 3) Measure out 2.1457g Phenol, 0.21457g Phenol, 0.021457g Phenol, and 0.00257g Phenol (for the latter I prepared a solution of 10mL and 0.22g Phenol and used 1mL [for 0.022g] and 0.1mL [for 0.0022g]). Add each measurement of phenol to 4 of the beakers with PVOH respectively. 4) Allow mixtures of PVOH, Phenol, and water to stir on hot/stir plate until fully dissolved. 5) Once full dissolution is achieved, add 1mL Glutaraldehyde to each of the 5 beakers. Allow to stir off heat for 2-3 minutes. 6) Pour solutions into labeled film dishes.
## Calculations and Notes
10%) 1.373E22 OH groups in 1g PVOH * 0.1 = 1.373E21 NOTE***** I just noticed I made a calculation mistake and in my original calculations had this equaling 1.373E23, 100x the actual amount. This number is then divided by 6.022E23 and multiplied by the molecular weight of Phenol (94.11). Therefore all of my phenol amounts added should have been less by a factor of 100. We will therefore redo the 0.1% and 0.01% films properly [the 0.1% and 0.01% solutions are ACTUALLY 10% and 1%]. |
