Welcome to the 2007 VGEM Team's OpenWetWare wiki.  This wiki contains the internal workings of our team, including our online lab notebook, project designs and other useful information. The VGEM Team is an undergraduate research group interested in synthetic biology and biological engineering, and will compete in MIT's 2007 international Genetically Engineered Machines competition [http://www.igem2007.com (iGEM)] in NovemberCheck on [http://parts.mit.edu/igem07/index.php/Virginia our official iGEM wiki] for our final project description and [http://seas.virginia.edu/VGEM our external website] for more information about the team.<br />
Welcome to the VGEM Team OWW wiki! The VGEM Team was founded by George McArthur to enable the University of Virginia to send an undergraduate bioengineering team to compete in MIT's international Genetically Engineered Machines competition [http://parts.mit.edu/igem (iGEM)].  The objective of the competition is to design and build an engineered biological system using DNA.  Systems will be constructed from [http://parts.mit.edu standard biological parts]. Last year, there were around [http://parts2.mit.edu/wiki/index.php/Schools_Participating_in_iGEM_2006 40 schools] participating from around the world ([http://parts.mit.edu/wiki/index.php/World_map see map]).  You can read more about the competition [http://icampus.mit.edu/projects/iGem.shtml here]. We'll be adding new information regularly, so be sure to check up on us soon.

'''Our project will be mind-blowing and reality-bending.''' We'll be programming microbes to tackle a medical or environmental engineering problem, or both!  Our group is interested in utilizing synthetic biology engineering principles in the metabolic engineering of bacteria for the production of sophisticated biomaterials, fine chemicals such as biopharmaceuticals, and renewable energy alternatives such as ethanol and hydrogen. <br />
Our 2007 project is focused on energy biotechnology and is titled '''"Harvesting Plant Biomass and Sunlight to Power Butanol Biosynthesis: A Synthetic Biology Approach to Metabolic Pathway Engineering."''' More information about our project can be found at our official iGEM wiki, which you can get to by clicking the iGEM logo below. Please check out our other project designs by clicking the "projects" link listed below the iGEM logo.

===Planning===
*[[IGEM:VGEM/2007/Projects| <font color="#000000">Projects</font>]]
During our weekly meetings throughout the spring semester, we'll be discussing relevant literature and developing project ideas. Our actual experiments will occur during the summer session, and we hope to have our results in order by the beginning of the fall semester in September.
