The 2010 UBC iGEM team collected hundreds of definitions of synthetic biology from the UBC community-undergrads, grad students and faculty from various disciplines. These definitions were sorted by field/occupation as well as level of education in order to synthesize these word clouds, representing the prevalent ideas in our community's awareness of synthetic biology!
As a continuation of our 2010 project, the 2011 UBC iGEM team collected asked hundreds of students for their definition of synthetic biology and produced this word cloud:

We will be organizing an activity at the Americas Regional Jamboree to fill up this dictionary with the help of all attending iGEM teams! So please keep an eye out for us and visit our poster!
