iGEM Dictionary

  • Initiated by British Columbia iGEM 2011)

Introduction

The British Columbia iGEM 2011 Team would like to invite all iGEMers, past, present and future to contribute to this iGEM Dictionary.

The purpose of this dictionary is to create a universally accessible iGEM language. It will serve as a great resource for new iGEM teams as well as outreach and mentorship activities.

We are looking for synthetic biology and iGEM specific keywords or phrases explained in layman terms. If you would like to contribute, please feel free to add your entries to this page. The British Columbia iGEM 2011 Team will also be organizing an activity to collect iGEM dictionary entries at the Americas Regional Jamboree! So keep an eye out for us and visit our poster!

Keywords and Phrases

Synthetic Biology - A new area of biological research that combines science and engineering; the design and construction of new biological functions and systems not found in nature.

iGEM - International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM), a worldwide Synthetic Biology competition aimed at undergraduate university students.

Parts Registry - A growing collection of genetic parts that can be mixed and matched to build synthetic biology devices and systems. Founded in 2003 at MIT, the Registry is part of the Synthetic Biology community's efforts to make biology easier to engineer. It provides a resource of available genetic parts to iGEM teams and academic labs.

Wet Laboratory (Wet Lab) - A laboratory equipped with appropriate plumbing, ventilation, and equipment to allow for hands-on scientific research and experimentation.

Computational Model - A mathematical model in computational science that requires extensive computational resources to study the behavior of a complex system by computer simulation. The system under study is often a complex nonlinear system for which simple, intuitive analytical solutions are not readily available. Rather than deriving a mathematical analytical solution to the problem, experimentation with the model is done by adjusting the parameters of the system in the computer, and studying the differences in the outcome of the experiments.

Human Practices - Ways to help human civilization consider, guide, and address the impacts of ongoing advances in biotechnology.

Biosafety - The prevention of unintentional exposure to pathogens and toxins, or their accidental release.

Biosecurity - The prevention of loss, theft, misuse, diversion or intentional release of pathogens and toxins.
