We are investigating the role of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH)transcription factors in differentiation and cell-type specification of neural subtypes. By determining the downstream targets of Atoh1, Neurog1/2, Ascl1, and Ptf1a, we hope to elucidate a cis-regulatory code for these transcription factors. In addition, by lineage tracing these factors, we hope to assess the ultimate cell fate of the neural subtypes they specify.
