This is a draft of a paper relating to work of Trent, Koch, and Thayer in the lab of George D. Bachand at Sandia National Laboratories. The data show ability to change direction and speed of microtubules in the inverted motility assay, using an electromagnet and microtubules having been labeled with 2.8 micron superparamagnetic microspheres. The data were taken in 2005 and 2006.

We are posting the draft on OpenWetWare because we feel that it's going to be a long time before we are able to submit to a peer-reviewed journal. The data in the paper represent the first proof-of-principle, but are somewhat confusing and further data are required. All of Trent, Koch, and Thayer left the group at roughly the same time, and so we are unable to take further data. We feel the methods are valuable to the scientific community: in situ observation (electromagnet, rectangular flow cells, long working distance objective) and end-specific labeling of microtubules with streptavidin-coated superparamagnetic microspheres.
