'''Starting soon.''' Plants are constantly exposed to environmental challenges which can restrict their growth, reproduction, colonization of new areas and can even drive the extinction of certain genotypes. Under a scenario of climate change, we need to know how variation in temperature regimes will impact plant evolution. Evidences are found that plants can also naturally adapt to their local environments. But this process often takes place in longer time scales than the fast-evolving climate change. There's a need to understand evolution of resistance and how this is modulated by the environment. My lab will undertake a research approach that seeks for naturally existing genetic variation which confers biotic and abiotic stress resistance phenotypes, and how these interact with the environment. For this, we will combine the genetics of natural variation, population genetic studies and functional molecular biology in the model species ''A.thaliana'' as first step to understand the natural evolution of stress tolerance driven by environmental interactions.
We study the evolution of ''Resistance'' genes and interacting loci that condition '''immune-related hybrid incompatibility''' in natural ''Arabidopsis thaliana'' populations. This research is complemented by the study of the modulation of ''NB-LRR'' signaling by '''temperature''' which is important under the current climate change predictions.

Genetics of Plant-Environment Interactions

We study the genetic and molecular bases for the adaptation of plants to their local environments. We mainly focus on the evolutionary adaptation of plant populations to abiotic and biotic stresses, which are major threats for plant survival. Derived from our basic research, we investigate ways for improving stress protection.

CURRENT AREAS OF RESEARCH

1. Immune-related hybrid incompatibility in plants

We study the evolution of Resistance genes and interacting loci that condition immune-related hybrid incompatibility in natural Arabidopsis thaliana populations. This research is complemented by the study of the modulation of NB-LRR signaling by temperature which is important under the current climate change predictions.

2. Natural variation of stress-induced metabolites

In collaboration with the lab of Prof. A.F.Tiburcio at the same department, we study the genetic bases for the naturally occurring variation of stress protective metabolites that condition resistance traits in plants.
