A Mounting medium is a liquid, polymer, resin, etc, used to mount microscopical specimens before examination. Its optical attributes (refractive index, transparency) and physical/chemical properties (viscosity, stability, preservation of the specimen) are crucial. Mounting media for fluorescent microscopy often contain anti-fading agents to lengthen the life of fluorophores by quenching free radicals generated during illumination of the specimen.
