Your user page

Perhaps the best place to start editing is in your user page. A brief description of who you are and what you are doing will help others feel comfortable with your edits and may even lead to productive collaborations.

You can access your user page when you are logged in by clicking on your username in the top right of any OpenWetWare page. You may want to open it now in a new window so that you can follow along as we set up your page. Once you are at your user page click on the edit tab. (If nothing has been added to your page you will be brought directly to the edit screen).

Formatting your user page

Breaking up your page into different sections will make it much easier to read. If you create enough different sections, a table of contents like the one at the top of this page will be created automatically. A section is made like this: ==Section Name==, a subsection like this: ===Sub-Section Name=== etc.

Lets create some sections in our user page. In the edit field type the following:

==Education==

==Research Interests==

==Links==

You can see what your page now looks like by clicking Show preview.

Filling out your page

It's easy to put content on your pages. You simply type it in under the appropriate section, hitting Enter twice to create a new paragraph.

Contact Info

In this section you may want to list your name, your lab address and phone number or your email address.

Education

This section will give us a chance to use lists. A bulleted list is created by entering an asterisk in front of each item like so:

*2003-Present PhD candidate in Biology at Mass Tech
*1999-2003 BS in Biology University of Utah

creating:

• 2003-Present PhD candidate in Biology at Mass Tech
• 1999-2003 BS in Biology University of Utah

Numbered lists are created in the same way using # in place of *.

Take a moment to fill in your educational background.

Research Interests

Add a brief description of your research interests.

Links

We only add this section as a means to demonstrate links. You can link to another page on OpenWetWare by including the page name in double brackets. For example a link to the Protocols page would be written as: [[Protocols]] giving: Protocols

A link to an external website is made by including the web address followed by the link title in single brackets: [http://www.pubmed.gov pubmed] gives: pubmed.

Click on Save page and you are done. If you are working on large edits you may want to save the page periodically since all unsaved work will be lost if the browser window is closed.

Now that you know some of the basics you can edit your user page as you please.
