Hydrodynamic focusing is utilizing a focusing stream to confine or reduce a flowing stream. This can be used to help focus a stream or for mixing purposes. Hydrodynamic focusing is passive mixing because it requires no external forces. The focusing stream usually has a higher flowrate which confines the focused stream and pushes it to an area of lower pressure[1]. The interaction between these two fluids can be controlled through various parameters.

Flow cytometry is a method used to analyze and count cells. In this system, a focusing stream surrounds and aligns the focused stream which contains the particles or cells with the interrogation optics[1]. On a macroscale, concentric nozzles are used to inject the focused stream into the focusing stream however this is difficult to do on the macroscale. In a microfluidic device, multiple inlet lines could be used to surround the focused stream. To reduce the number of inlets, grooves may be placed in the channel that will facilitate the focusing stream to surround the focused stream.
