Smartphone Microscope

Summer 2014- Joe Miles, a summer student from Georgia Perimeter College, and Srikant Iyer (pictured at left) constructed a Smartphone Microscope, an inexpensive and relatively easy-to-build setup that can be made at any lab or school!

HeLa @ Tech: Faculty Panel on Science, Ethics, and Medicine

October 1, 2012 - Christine was part of a multidisciplinary panel on science, ethics, and medicine. The panel, HeLa @ Tech: Faculty Panel on Science, Ethics, and Medicine, explored a variety of topics related to the ethical responsibilities of researchers.

Ethics, Race and Medicine: A Discussion of the Story of Henrietta Lacks

September 21, 2012 - Candace will represent the Payne lab in a panel discussion for Georgia Tech Family Weekend. The interdisciplinary panel, Ethics, Race and Medicine: A Discussion of the Story of Henrietta Lacks, will discuss the Freshman Reading Project in the context of undergraduate education and research.

Midtown Book Club Visits the Payne Lab

August 8, 2012 - The Midtown Book Club toured the Payne Lab as part of their discussion of "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." You can read about the visit on the Midtown Patch.

Blended Research @ the Library

February 28, 2012 - Steve was part of a multidisciplinary panel on Nanomedicine organized by the Georgia Tech Library. The panel was designed to give the Georgia Tech community an overview of recent advances in the field of nanomedicine.

October 21, 2009 - Christine appeared on the WREK 91.1 radio show "Inside the Black Box". That's her head right there!

K-12 Outreach

High School Researchers

Summer, 2013 - Sathvik Namburar, a rising senior at Woodward Academy studied active transport and passive transport of both normal and enlarged lysosomes with Austin Cyphersmith. In his research class at school, Sathvik will write papers, submit his work to the Intel and Siemens research competitions, create a poster, and give oral presentations on his work in the Payne lab.

Summer, 2010 - Katelyn Snider, a senior at Roswell High School, assisted Chip Humphries with his LDL transport experiments. Katelyn labeled LDL with fluorophores, recorded emission spectra, and used fluorescent substrates to demonstrate drug-induced inhibition of enzymatic activity in cultured cells. She is pictured with Chip.

Boy Scout Days

October 2, 2010 and February 19, 2011 - The Payne Lab participated in the Alpha Chi Sigma chemistry merit badge days! Boy Scout troops from all over central Georgia got to see live cells on a fluorescence microscope.

Luella High School

April 1, 2010 - Students from Luella High School toured the Payne Lab, the Lyon Lab, and Marcus Nanotechnology Building. They also participated in demonstrations led by the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS).

Carver Early College High School

March 17, 2010 - Mr. Qasim Rehman and students from Carver Early College High School visited Georgia Tech. The visit included tours of the Brown Lab, Payne Lab, and France Lab.

Roswell High School

March 13, 2010 - Members of the Roswell High School Science Bowl team visited the Payne and Brown labs at Georgia Tech.
