The Lab of Payne

July, 2009. From Left to Right: Chip, Don, Solaire, Amy, Ashlee, CKP and Emily.

Principal Investigator

Christine K. Payne, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry
Christine received an S.B. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California Berkeley.

Post Docs

Ashlee St. John Iyer
Ashlee earned her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Georgia Tech in Dr. Andrew Lyon's group where she studied colloidal assembly. She received a B.A. in Chemistry from the New College of Florida. In the Payne Lab, she will be tracking single particles in live cells.
Don-Ricardo Miller
Don earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Morehouse School of Medicine where he studied proteins related to circadian rhythm and received a B.S. in Chemistry from Morgan State University. In the Payne Lab, Don works to target optical probes in live cells.

Craig Szymanski
Craig earned his PhD from Clemson University in Dr. Jason McNeill's lab where he did research on conjugated polymer nanoparticle photophysics. Craig earned his BS in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. In the Payne lab, Craig will be working on 2 photon imaging and particle tracking.

Graduate Students

William H. Humphries IV
Chip received a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.M. in Music Performance from Ohio Northern University. Chip is interested in developing new methods for live cell imaging and determing the rate of lysosomal degradation.
Amy Jablonski
Amy attended the University of Alabama-Birmingham and recieved a B.S. in Chemistry. Amy's research focus is using quantum dots for imaging intracellular transport.
Emily Herman
Emily graduated from Saint Mary's College with a B.S. in Chemistry. Emily is utilizing cruciforms, a specialized class of flourophores synthesized by the Bunz Lab, to quantify endoplasmic reticulum stress in vivo.

Undergraduate Students

Jairo Zapata
Jairo is a junior chemistry major at Georgia Tech. Jairo's current focus is writing ImageJ plugins to assist with data analysis while learning general microscopy techniques.

Past Students

Nicole Fay (Spring 07 to Spring 08, GT undergraduate)
Nicole is currently enrolled in the Chemical Biology Graduate Program at the University of California, Berkeley and working in the lab of Prof. Jay Groves.

Solaire Finkenstaedt-Quinn (Summer 09, REU from Macalester University)
Solaire has returned to Minnesota to complete her undergraduate degree in chemistry.

Kevin Hardin (Fall 08 - Spring 09, GT undergraduate)
Kevin is currently working at Tulane University in Dr. Samuel J. Landry's lab as a Laboratory Research Assistant.

Jesse Haulk (Spring 08 - Summer 08, GT undergraduate)

Melinda Ogden (Fall 07 - Spring 09, M.S.)
Mindi is pursuing a career as a high school teacher.

Jenna Tomlinson (Summer 08, REU from Grand Valley State University)
Jenna will begin graduate studies in the Program in Biomedical Science at the University of Michigan Medical School in Fall 09.
