In this lab, the Balmer series was studied, which allowed us to determine the value of the Rydberg constant. This experiment made use of the fact that electrons emit photons when making a transition between an excited state and the ground state. With a prism, it is possible to separate light of different wavelength, given that the index of refraction is a function of the wavelength in glass (and other materials too, I'm sure).

Balmer Series Summary

In this lab, the Balmer series was studied, which allowed us to determine the value of the Rydberg constant. This experiment made use of the fact that electrons emit photons when making a transition between an excited state and the ground state. Using a prism, and also the fact that the index of refraction of matter is wavelength dependent, we separated the different wavelengths into a line spectrum.
