Overview
- Automated extraction of solid samples with common solvents at elevated temperature and pressure
- Extraction steps: preheating sample cell (optional), filling cell with solvent, heating (equilibration), static extraction, rinsing, purging solvent and extractives into collection vessel, and relief
- Current applications
- Water and 95% ethanol extractions for NREL biomass compositional analysis
- Liquid hot water biomass pretreatment
Specifications
- Oven temperature
- Ambient to 200°C
- Pressure
- ~1600 psi
- Available sample cells
- 13-10mL stainless steel (~1.5g dry biomass)
- 6-66mL zirconium (~10g dry biomass)
- 6-100mL zirconium
- Available extract collection vessels

Sample Preparation Considerations
- Grinding
- More surface area for efficient extraction
- Sample moisture
- Samples may require mixing with drying (diatomaceous earth) or dispersing (Ottawa sand) agent
- Sample pH
- Mildly acidic or basic samples can be extracted in zirconium cells
