Synthetic Biology 2.0 -- Day 3

The third day of the conference will be dedicated to presentation, discussion, and deliberation of the four key societal issues associated with synthetic biology: biosecurity & risk, public understanding & perception, ownership, sharing & innovation, and community organization. All conferees will be expected to participate in these conversations.

Biosecurity and Biosafety

For the past three months, UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy has worked to find proposals (a) that can be implemented by community vote, (b) have broad support among the more than two dozen synthetic biologists interviewed for the Berkeley project, and (c) can potentially reduce the already-small risks posed by our discipline. The Berkeley group has identified six possible interventions which they believe fit these criteria. You can download the paper here (which will be periodically updated to reflect community input).

There will be discussion prior to the meeting to garner community thoughts and responses in various meetings and also online. You can find out more on the biosecurity and biosafety page.

Other Community Initiatives

There have been ongoing discussions by the Synthetic Society Working Group concerning other societal issues.

This site is hosted on OpenWetWare and can be edited by all members of the Synthetic Biology community.
