T/R Red Red1.tif 0% gold: 100% silver Nanowires were substantially clumped, illustrating the high percentage of silver present within the sample; this is due to silver's tendency to aggregate. Isolated hexagonal forms surrounding the wires can be attributed to crystallized silver molecules. The intertwined nature of the nanowires prevents accurate measurement of the phage lengths, but they appear to be on the nanometer scale.

Green GreenYellowSilver_1.tif 66% gold, 34% silver (measured in TEM, Mod 3 Day 3) intended to be 50%/50% Nanowires were reasonably distributed across the entire sample of phage. The wires are twisted into wire form, indicating that we did indeed form wires that will be further tested. While some strands are longer, others are significantly shorter. The scale is unknown to us at the moment.
Blue GrapeBlue.tif 85% Au, 15% Ag Nanowires are approximately 20 nm in diameter and very long, suggesting multiple phages linked together. We achieved a lower Ag percentage than expected (15% observed vs. 33% expected), possibly because a single-element deposition leads to a more stable lattice structure. Thus, a smaller amount of Ag was incorporated into the wires.
T/R Pink PinkOrange1.tif 92% gold: 8% silver (Measured in TEM, Mod 3 Day 3) The observed nanowire in PinkOrange1.tif is greater than 900 nm in length, suggesting that it is comprised of multiple phages. Image PinkOrange3_Silver disk.tif shows hexagonal disk structures which are crystallized silver nano-particles.

Length scales: 100nm for PinkOrange3_Silverdisk.tif; 200nm for everything else

Grape GrapeBlue.tif 85% Au/ 15% Ag. Scale in photo is 200nm. Web of nano-wires is approximately 20-50 nm in diameter and from its length is likely composed of multiple phage. Possible reasons for high proportion of gold: Silver crystallizes more readily than gold as seen in PinkOrange3_Silver disk.tif, sequestering of silver in these larger structures would have decreased the amount of silver available to bind to phage. Also p8 was selectively mutated to bind with a high affinity to gold therefore preferential binding of gold over silver to be expected.
Gray GreenYellowSilver4.tif 66% Gold, 34% Silver Somewhat long nanowires appeared - they may be from multiple phages. In most instances single wires rather than a web were observed. As expected, Gold percentage was higher than the theoretical because of Gold's higher binding affinity.
