Melissa Howard graduated from Highview Baptist School in Louisville, KY as valedictorian of her class. She just finished her bachelor's in biochemistry from Asbury College in May 2007. She graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences, working with Dr. Michael Jay on developing smart nanoparticle formulations. They are working on developing nanoparticles that can be targeted to tumors via  passive or active targeting. Specifically, she will be working on developing a PEGylated nanoparticle that will be responsive to the tumor microenvironment in order to increase local concentration and decrease systemic toxicity.
Melissa Howard graduated summa cum laude from Asbury College in May 2007 with a degree in biochemistry. While there, she served as president of the Sigma Zeta Math and Science Honor Society, captain of the intercollegiate volleyball team, and as a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Council. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences under the direction of IGERT advisors, Dr. Michael Jay and Dr. Thomas Dziubla. Her project centers around the development of PEGylated dual-imaging therapeutic nanovectors for cancer therapies with the long-term goal of functionalizing the nanovectors so as to make them responsive to the tumor microenvironment.
