Task List

  • Find swelling capacity of beads
  • Soak the 10% beads in pH=1 solution (0.1M HCl)
  • Vacuum filtrate the 25% clay content beads

Swelling capacity of beads

  • Vacuum filtrate the beads. Weigh them before and after
    • Vacuum filtration did not dry the beads thoroughly enough.
    • Beads were placed in acetone to further remove water
  • 10% clay content
    • Mass of wet beads:
    • Mass of dry beads: 176.58-173.66 = 2.92 g
      • Swelling capacity = (176.58-173.66)
  • Place dried beads in 0.1M HCl
    • Measure pH
    • Let them sit till Wednesday to find change in pH
      • 10%: pH = 0.933
      • 25%: pH = 0.901
      • 40%: pH = 1.040
