Objective

To synthesize gold nanoparticles while controlling the volume of air in contact with the solution, the volume of water used, and the cooling of the reaction mixture. The mini preps were also worked up today.

Description

Nanoparticle Synthesis 7 reaction mixtures were set up, each with varying conditions. Each tube contained 1 μL of BSA, 1 μL of HAuCl4 and had water as the solvent. The reaction mixtures were placed in the heat block for 2 hours at 80°C.

  • Tube A - A 1.5 mL epitube was used. 800 μL of water was added to the BSA and HAuCl4. There was air present on top of the solution. Once the two hour reaction period was over, the tube was immediately removed from the heat block and was left to sit at room temperature.
  • Tube B - A 600 uL epitube was used with 600 μL of water. There was no space between the top of the solution and the top of the tube. Once the two hour reaction period was over, the tube was immediately removed from the heat block and was left to sit at room temperature.
