Objective

Crosslink the Na-MT film, perform ion conductivity tests on the glutaraldehyde film, UV-Vis of the solutions from the first porphyrin crosslinking, FTIR of films

Description

Crosslinking of Na-MT Film

  1. Allow the PVOH film containing glutaraldehyde to dry completely.
  2. Prepare a solution of 100 mL H2O, 2 mL concentrated H2SO4, and 20 g Na2SO4 in a 150 mL beaker. (solution is referred to as glutaraldehyde fixant)
  3. Place stir bar in beaker and a Buchner funnel top (cap) over the stir bar
  4. Heat solution to 70°C (temperature on hotplate should be about 160)
  5. Place film in solution for one hour.
  6. Prepare 100 mL of a 1% HCl solution in a 150 mL beaker. Place a stir bar and an inverted buchner funnel into beaker.
  7. Heat HCl solution to 70°C
  8. Remove film from glutaraldehyde fixant and rinse with distilled water.
  9. Place film into HCl solution for 30 minutes.
  10. Prepare 0.2 M sodium bicarbonate solution. (1.68 g in 100 mL)
  11. After 30 minutes, remove the film from the HCl solution and place into the sodium bicarbonate solution (at room temperature) for about 15 minutes.
  12. Use tweezers to remove the film from the sodium bicarbonate solution.
  13. Rinse film with deionized water and place in a beaker with distilled water until it is used.

Ion Conductivity

  1. Secure the glutaraldehyde film in the osmosis apparatus.
  2. Fill the left side of the apparatus with water and ensure that no liquid leaks through the film. Then fill the right side of the apparatus with salt solution. Record the starting levels of each side.
  3. Place an electrode in each side.
  4. Record the conductivity every 5 minutes for the first hour, then once each hour afterwards.
  5. Leave the film in the apparatus until Wednesday.
  6. On Wednesday, measure the conductivity one final time and then remove the film from the apparatus.

FTIR

Data

Glutaraldehyde Film Ion Conductivity Results

Time Water Side Conductivity (μs/cm) Water Height (mL) Salt Soln Conductivity (μs/cm) Salt Soln Height (mL)
2% wt/mL 0.02 g/mL 0.406 g 20 mL
1% wt/mL 0.01 g/mL 0.204 g 20 mL
0.5% wt/mL 0.005 g/mL 0.101 g 20 mL
0.2% wt/mL 0.002 g/mL 0.041 g 20 mL

Notes

  • The film was removed from the apparatus at the end of 4 hours (instead of Wednesday) because it had started to leak.
