Objective
To conduct the salt test on the porphyrin film, to take UV-Vis of the remaining solutions, and to measure the sodium content of the PVOH/glutaraldehyde film that was soaked in NaOH.
Description
- The acetone that the dye film was placed in was changed.
Porphyrin Salt Test
- The porphyrin film was removed from the 2% wt H2SO4 and was placed in 50 mL of the sodium sulfate prepared last class.
- The time for the porphyrin film to change from green to pink was recorded. (took
- The film was sliced to have the width of the UV-Vis cuvette.
- The thickness of the film was measured.
- The sliced film was placed in the cuvette and a UV-Vis spectra was taken.
- The sliced film was then placed into additional 2% wt H2SO4 until it turned green. (Time to turn green =
- Once the film slice had turned green, it was placed into 50 mL of the solution of aluminum sulfate prepared last class.

Notes
- start time for soaking in sodium sulfate was 1:32
- The old acetone that the dye film was placed in (on Wednesday) was still clear in color.
- The H2SO4 solution that the porphyrin has been soaking in since Wednesday was green (when the film was removed from it)
- At the end of 2 hours and 15 minutes, the porphyrin film was still green, so we left it to soak in the sodium sulfate solution over the weekend. UV-Vis will be taken on Monday.
