George McArthur IV

George is the founder of UVA's Virginia Genetically Engineered Machine (VGEM) Team. He is a third-year chemical engineering and music double major concentrating in biotechnology and composition respectively.

My academic interests are in the areas of marine biotechnology, metabolic pathway engineering, bioprocess engineering, and synthetic biology. Specifically, I would like to design a bioprocess that utilizes engineered bacteria (via synthetic biology principles) to produce a desired product such as fuel or pharmaceuticals (via metabolic pathway engineering) based on genetic components derived from marine organisms. Additionally, I'm interested in bioremediation, marine conservation and supporting biodiversity through engineering and applied science.

I'm currently looking into graduate programs and preparing to work on my undergraduate thesis, which will hopefully incorporate proteorhodopsin into an E. coli bioprocess. Please let me know if you know of any departments that do the kind of research I'm into.
