Objective

  • Dry Nanofibers
  • Make more colloid solution
  • Begin a new reaction - Oxidation of Styrene with a Gold Nanofiber Catalyst

Description

  1. Drying the Fibers
    1. The majority of the water was removed with a transfer pipette. The fibers were clumped in a ball and placed in a vacuum oven to dry.H2O
      • To use the vacuum oven, close the valve, open the vacuum, turn on the oven, turn on the vacuum, and push the door until the gauge registers pressure.
  2. Make more Colloid
    1. The solutions were prepared with the original 30:1 and 45:1 mixture.
      • 30:1 - 2.095mL of Lysozyme solution, 0.5mL of HAuCl4 solution, and 2.405mL H2O
      • 45:1 - 1.40mL of Lysozyme solution, 0.5mL of HAuCl4 solution, and 3.1mL H2O
  3. Begin Reaction
    1. 0.6mg of fibers were placed in a 50mL round bottom flask
    2. 20mL of toluene was heated to 100°C in an oil bath
    3. 1.38mL of Styrene was added
    4. Reaction allowed to spin for 15 hours

Data

  • 0.01454g Lysozyme in 50mL of distilled H2O
  • 0.01445g Lysozyme in 50mL of distilled H2O
  • 0.02950g Lysozyme in 100mL of distilled H2O
  • 0.08899g HAuCl4 in 100mL of distilled H2O
