Objective

  1. Make a column for solid-phase extraction and concentration of BPA samples.

Description

  1. Packing the Column
    1. To pack the column we got a syringe with a stop cock at the bottom.
    2. We packed the column with glass wool and washed it with methanol to help pack.
    3. Next, a layer of sand was put on top
    4. A solution of 9.9999g of Silica in methanol was poured into the column.
      • The column must settle.
    5. After draining the column was washed with DI water until the column ran clear.
    6. Then 10mL of BPA and let it run into the layer of silica.
    7. then 10mL of water, then 30mL of methanol were run into the column
      • These were divided into 8 5mL fractions.

Data

TLC plates did not show any evidence of BPA--it is believed that the concentration (10 ppm) is too low to effectively use this method.
