Pneumolysin is a cytolytic toxin, which together with cell wall fragments contributes to inflammatorh damage. ([1]) Malley et al. found that pneumolysin stimulates tumor necrosis factor-�and IL-6 release in macrophages, with the involvement of Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs) in pneumolysin recognition.
