Procedures

New Exfoliated Clay Film Synthesis

  1. Determine how much 4% exfoliated NaMT needed for 10% clay solution
    • 0.11 g=(Mass of 4% NaMT soln needed)*0.04
    • Mass of 4% NaMT soln needed=2.75 g
    • 2.7613 g 4% NaMT added
  2. Add ~1g PVA
    • 1.004 g PVA added
  3. Add 7 mL H2O
  4. Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
  5. Cool the solution to room temperature
  6. Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde
  7. Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
  8. Pour solution into teflon dish to dry

Powder X-ray Diffraction Measurements

  • Sample prep:
    • Pat dry film soaked in 8 ppm malachite green solution
      • 200 ppm done by Andrew's group
      • 80 ppm done by Eleni's group
      • 2 ppm, plain PVA film, & NaMT powder done by James' group
    • Place film on pXRD disk
    • Press tape over film to hold in place, using a razor to cut off excess

Stock Solution Preparation

  • Make 200mL 200ppm
    • 40 mg MG in 200 mL volumetric flask
  • 80 ppm made by Eleni's group
  • 8 ppm made by Andrew's group
  • 2 ppm made by James' group
