Finishing Cation-Exchanged Clay Films
- Warm 150mL of Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 15 minutes
- Place film in Sodium Sulfate Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 1 hour with gentle stirring
- Warm 150mL of 1% HCl at 80C for 15 minutes
- Place film in 1% HCl Solution (see below for details) at 80C for 30 minutes with gentle stirring
- Place film in Sodium Bicarbonate Solution for 15 minutes at room temperature with gentle stirring
Start New Film Synthesis
- PVA Exchanged-Clay Film
- Add 7mL of water to ___ g of 22,000MW polyvinyl alcohol and ___ g of exchanged NaMT in a glass vial
- Stir the solution with constant heating at 75C until the polymer is dissolved and the clay is dispersed (~15 minutes)
- Cool the solution to room temperature
- Add 0.5mL 0.8 wt% glutaraldehyde.
- Stir for an additional 3 minutes to ensure homogeneity
- Pour solution into a teflon dish to dry until the next class
