Objectives

  • Begin 8-day study of films on silver leaching and antibacterial effects.
    • Note that all films were cut into 0.5-gram pieces before being tested.

Eight-Day Silver Leaching Study

  • The protocol on 2013/02/20 was followed, except that solutions were placed in polypropylene beakers to prevent silver adsorption.
  • Poly(lactic acid) films containing 33wt% 105AgLMT or 33wt% LMT + AgNO3 were tested.
  • Measurements will be taken once per day over a period of 8 days.

Eight-Day Antibacterial Effect Study with E. coli

  • A protocol similar to that used in the 15-hour study on 2013/04/07 was followed.
  • Films made on 2013/04/10 (PLA2002D + 33wt% 105AgLMT and PLA2002D + 33wt% LMT + AgNO3) were used.
  • Films were left to soak in autoclaved LB media for a period of 1, 3, 5 or 7 days. Subsequently, 1 mL of E. coli cells was added to the films in LB and shaken in an orbital shaker at 230 rpm and 37°C for 24 h. The absorbance of the solutions was observed at 600 nm at the end of the 24-h period to determine the extent of bacterial growth.
