Introduction to the Course

Being the first day of the course, we ran a few simple experiments and made a couple of simple solutions:

  1. A 100 mL solution of 1.71 mM NaCl in H2O
  2. 10 mL of 13.5 µM methylene blue dye from an 87 ppm stock
  3. 50 mL of HCl with the same concentration as the HAuCl4

The experiments we ran were:

  1. Water densities versus temperature
    1. 10 1 mL samples of H2O were massed to determine the density at room temperature
  2. Water was rinsed in "clean" glassware, and a UV-VIS was run to determine if the glassware was clean
  3. DI,tap, and HPLC water was tested for conductivity and pH
    1. Conductivity (μS/cm)
      1. Tap - 494
      2. DI - 90.4
      3. HPLC - 132
    2. pH
      1. Tap - 7.42
      2. DI - 5.8
      3. HPLC - 6.03
