Objective

Description

Part A (Preparing a film)

  • Preparing a film (0.5 g of MW:22000 + 5ml of water @70C)
  • After it is cooled down, add 2.25ml of gluteraldehyde (KEEP EVERYTHING UNDER THE HOOD)
  • Pour and leave it in the teflon plate to dry (UNDER THE HOOD)

Part B (Prepare 100% exchanged Na.MT(clay))

Theoretical Values (DMHDIBr was the surfactant used)

(0.92 meq v/g)* (2g clay) * (1eqv/ 1000meqv) * (1 mol surfactant/ 1eqv ) * (401.47 g/ 1 mol of surfactant) =0.7387 g of surfactant

  • Add 25 ml of water, 25 ml of ethanol, 2.004 g of clay and 0.7390 g of surfactant were placed in to a 100ml beaker.
  • The beaker was placed on a hot plate but only stirring feature was used.
  • The beaker left to stay on hot plate for a week.

Part C (50% exchanged Na.MT)

Theoretical Values (DMHDIBr was the surfactant used)

0.7387 g/2 = 0.3695 g of surfactant

  • Add 25 ml of water, 25 ml of ethanol, 2.004 g of clay and 0.3690 g of surfactant were placed in to a 100ml beaker.
  • The beaker was placed on a hot plate but only stirring feature was used.
  • The beaker left to stay on hot plate for a week.
  • Add 25 ml of water, 25 ml of ethanol, 2.004 g of clay were placed in to a 100ml beaker.
  • The beaker was placed on a hot plate but only stirring feature was used.

The beaker left to stay on hot plate for a week.

Part D (Fe3O4) coated NaMT

  • 40 ml of water, 2 g of clay 1.04 g of Fe3O4 and 0.53 g of FeSO4 were placed in to a 100 ml beaker.
  • 2.67 f of NaOH was dissolved completely with 10 ml of water and added to the previously made solution drop by drop.
  • The solution was heated at 40 C and kept on stirring for 45 minutes.
  • After the precipitates form, the solution filtered.
  • The filter paper with the precipitants were placed under the hood for 2 days to dry completely.
