Objectives

  • summarize and explain results for pH 4, 6, 7
  • make solutions for other pHs
  • sonicate precipitates and run UV-Vis
  • measure gold availability at pH 4 , 6, 7 / measure AuClOHx concentration

preparation of gold solutions

  • to get to pH 4 we will add: 300 uL of 5 mM HAuCL, (240*2) 480 uL of 5 mM NaOH, 2220 uL of neutralized water

  • to get to pH 5 we will add 300 uL of 5 mM HAuCl, 1470 uL of 1 mM NaOH = (1470*2/5) 588 uL 5mM NaOH, 2112 uL of neutralized water

  • to get to pH 6 we will add 300 uL of 5 mM HAuCL, 1497 uL of 1 mM NaOH = (1497*2/5) 599 uL 5mM NaOH, 2101 uL of neutralized water

  • to get to pH 7 we will add 300 uL of 5 mM HAuCl, (300*2) 600 uL 5 mM NaOH, 2100 uL of neutralized water

  • to get pH 8 we will add 300 uL of 5 mM HAuCl, (300*2) 600 uL 5 mM NaOH, (3*2) 6 uL 1 mM NaOH, 2094 uL of neutralized water

Observations

  • all Gln solutions are clear, slightly purple and show black precipitate. pH 6 has the most precipitate.
  • Cys solutions for pH 4 and 7 are yellow, pH 6 is clear and shows a white precipitate
  • Arg solution precipitates most at pH 4 and least at pH 7
