Feb 25 - Thermal energy study

Objectives

  • To cure T-plates for stength test
  • To carry out thermodynamic tests
  • To analyze XRD data obtained on 20/02 for epoxy and epoxy and TiO2 films
  • To set up antibacterial experiment
  • Calculations for New Film Synthesis using JD-230, instead of JD-400
  • Make Agar plates
    • use microwave, not oven

Thermal energy study

As shown in Figure 1 the set up for the thermal energy study consisted of filling the aluminum dish with water, covering with foil, and placing the thermometer in the water. The Hotplate also has a thermocouple placed on the surface to record temperature.

  • Figure 1.

  • The study will start with the hotplate already warmed up to 120 degrees Celsius which as recorded by the Digi-sense was actual 104 degrees Celsius

Readings of the water temperature are taken every 10 minutes for two hours.

  • Table 1.

Table 1. Shows the initial trial of this experiment. The results reflect a dish with no coating. It was observed that the temperature of the hotplate would decrease over time dropping as low as 89 degrees at around 40 minutes. It is believed that the air flow created by the hood vacuum, cools off the surface of the hotplate. It was decided that the thermal energy test would be completed on a bench top since only water is being worked with. The experiment was aborted, as reflected in the data.

Analysis of XRD data

The peaks were analyzed for identification of TiO2. First, the poweder XRD graph for an epoxy film is reported, followed by the pXRD of an epoxy and 10% TiO2 film. <br.

Antimicrobial Testing

  • The cells dried on the film so we decided to redo the testing from last Friday with 1400 micro-liter, instead of 600 micro-liter
  • Check on the cells on Friday
