Objective

Study the effects of [Au]/[BSA] on fiber formation.

Description

  1. Solutions of Au and BSA were set-up in microcentrifuge tubes in the following ways:
Tube Number 1 2 3 4 5 6
Amount of 2.9mM HAuCl4 100 μL 80 μL 60 μL 50 μL 40 μL 20 μL
Amount of 17.7μM BSA 100 μL 100 μL 100 μL 100 μL 100 μL 100 μL
Amount of Distilled Water 800 μL 820 μL 840 μL 850 μL 860 μL 880 μL
Ratio [Au]/[BSA] 163.842 131.073 98.3051 81.9209 65.5367 32.7684

2. All of the mixtures were placed on the heat block at 80°C for three hours.

Data

This picture shows the results of our experiment (tubes numbered as in table above). Only the highest ratio has purple fibers, and the fibers did not form until the tube was removed from the heat block. The rest of the tubes have a lighter purple color as the ratio decreases.
