hi there, you might want to consider using the naming convention: 'Hoatlin:Lab members' instead of just "Lab members", the advantage is that if you start all the names of your lab pages with "Hoatlin:" you can take advatage of the "De-wikify" feature of the site. For instance if you go to http://knight.openwetware.org, and compare it to http://openwetware.org/wiki/knight you'll see what I mean. Any page you browse to from there that starts with "Knight:" will remain de-wikied. Labs like this feature since it makes a more "presentable" frontpage to the world for their site (you can of course still edit the site via the wiki).

I got it, glad youre enjoying the wiki - its been a great tool for us as well. also, you can also post messages directly on a user's userpage, e.g. User talk:Jasonk, then the user gets a little notice letting them know someone has left them a message. ill help you move those pages over for the de-wikifying, i just moved 'Publications' as an example. hi maureen, yeah you and your lab could just use the wiki for your interaction with the website. However, if you wanted to give out a link to an external party that would provide a more "professional"-looking site (e.g. doesn't have wiki stuff on the side/top) - you could just give them the URL: http://hoatlin.openwetware.org,and they probbaly wouldn't even realize it was a wiki. of course if they come upon the site via OWW they would see the wiki version. Both are still published to the web. jason

trouble with links

HI -I'm trying to put in some links in my replication club but I get error messages on some, saying something about cold fusion. Not compatible?

• The first link seems to work just fine, see above. If you're having problems, it may be because of some other formatting error on the page. For instance, you don't need a "|" when making links to external pages (i.e. webpages not on OWW) as you have on your replication club page. Hope this helps.

Jason, is there a way to make some section of our lab wiki locked? I noticed in Pam Silver's site there is a little teeny padlock. -M

• Jasonk 17:58, 20 June 2006 (EDT):There is currently not a way to make sections of the wiki locked to everyone but a subset of users. Its both technically not feasible with the current wiki software as well as a community decision that is still being discussed here. The little locked wiki on the Silver lab site is a private wiki they host themselves, in the future we hope to offer a distribution of OWW that labs could run locallly for private pages, but we're hoping to keep all of OpenWetWare.org open access. But any input you had on this would be great in the discussion area I linked above.

Also, I don't know how to work the messaging within the wiki very well. Is there a section that describes that?

It's really great that you are finding it to be so useful for collaborating between labs in your field. Don't worry about "clogging up" OWW we should be set to handle an influx of new users without too much trouble. In fact in response to the recent Nature article we've had a big influx of new users over the last 1.5 weeks anyway. best, jason

Check out this page. It's a filter on the recent changes that only tracks pages that have edits with the Hoatlin prefix. You can find out how to make other pages with specific filters here.
