Notes for June 28, 2010

  • When reviewing my Search Comparison Spreadsheet, I realized that I was missing some searches. I had intended to have 27 total searches for each possible combination of repository, search method and resource/search tool. Although some searches either came up with no results at all or too many results to be useful, it is important to record that I have done them. I will create another table explaining the search methods as a visual aid for my paper/presentation today.

Goals for today:

  1. Complete missing searches
  2. Add numbers of hits and misses to Search Comparison Spreadsheet
  3. Add individual hits to Shared Fields Spreadsheet
  4. Create visual table of search methodology
  5. Complete outline of paper/presentation
  • Realistically, I will probably not get to the last two until tomorrow.

Observations

  • Valerie Enriquez 17:46, 28 June 2010 (EDT): I'm starting to remember why I had originally not listed every possible search. However, it is important to show my work to prove why certain searches were useful for some repositories and others were not. For example: ORNL DAAC has subdatabases like FLUXNET that make it easier to search general search functions like Google Scholar in conjunction with a data author name. However, Pangaea has project titles, but the subdatabases are only listed as water, sediment, or ice. Or, while searching for a DOI prefix for Pangaea or ORNL DAAC pulled a lot of hits, looking for the keywords "study accession number" (since the prefix "S" was far too general) did not prove to be very useful in the searches.
