I like the new template... can we apply it to the others? --Sri Kosuri 17:43, 23 February 2006 (EST)

I like it too. It's from the wikipedia introduction. We may want to change the color scheme so it matches the site better (maybe colors from the new logo). Also, when the tab links wrap as the page width gets smaller the tabs tend to separate from the body of the page--any idea how to fix this?--Jgritton 17:57, 23 February 2006 (EST)

This page is really a template, not a page itself. I would say that OpenWetWare:Getting started should be the "real" page that the Main Page and the other getting started pages should link to. The idea for this scheme came from Wikipedia, it means that when new users click on the edit tab, the code looks very very simple such that they aren't intimidated by it. Nevertheless, these improvements are great. --RS 12:28, 24 February 2006 (EST)

  • In my opinion, this is really a terrible way to introduce people to the wiki. When they click edit, they don't see what they saw on the page and so don't see the source of what's on the page. They have to understand templates to understand how this page works. It makes more sense to me to not hide the source when we're encouraging people to look at sources and edit it. --Austin 12:31, 24 February 2006 (EST)
  • I don't agree. I think new users would have a hard time figuring out where to edit. It's hard to remember pre-wiki days, but when you start out, things can be quite daunting. making their first edit as simple as possible is the best way to go I think, even if it is hiding a lot of the complexity. --Sri Kosuri 12:36, 24 February 2006 (EST)
  • I agree with Sri. On another note, to get the OpenWetWare:Getting started page to reflect the latest version of the OpenWetWare:Getting started/Introduction template, you have to make an edit to the OpenWetWare:Getting started page. --RS 13:16, 24 February 2006 (EST)

</li> tag

  • Jennyn 11:41, 28 April 2006 (EDT): Not sure what happened, but I kept seeing the </li> tags at the bottom of the tabs, so I just deleted them and it's working now. Not sure why those tags would show up on the page.

This page needs help

I think it can go without saying (but I will say it anyway), that a page titled "Getting started" and obviously targeted toward new users unaware of exactly how to edit in wiki style rather than containing advice on how to "get started" as the revision here does very well, is instead completely useless and has now become a sandbox. Who's responsibility is it to make sure this place stays in good order? I am willing to take on that responsibility if no one else does. Obviously, editing this page requires permissions I do not currently hold, who do I contact to request such permissions? Andrew D. Kehr 15:35, 3 December 2009 (EST)
