12:35, 19 September 2008 (EDT)This lab summary is too sparse, although I will grant that there weren't a whole lot of interesting results to report. It's good that you put some uncertainty on your final fall time result, although I would say your uncertainty level is too high, given what I know about the cursor measurement.

-We learned about operation and function of the oscilloscope. -Wiki page for this lab.User:Stephen K. Martinez/Notebook/Junior Lab/2008/09/10 -For my measurement of the fall time I used the cursor reading because Dr. Koch said it was more accurate: 49.6ms, as for the error because it was only an estimation and by eye, I would estimate this would have an error of at least 5ms. -I learned about the High and Low pass filters and ac and dc coupling, although I am still vague on these issues. -The Lab actually took up the entire lab period, I played very little outside the realm of its coverage -To be completely honest, I don't understand why we need this lab this semester if this is our only usage of the oscilloscope.

Steve Koch 12:37, 15 September 2008 (EDT): Hey Stephen, I'll give you more comments later, but wanted to respond to your last sentence now. There were two main purposes of the lab: (a) to get a start on a fairly well structured lab that everyone was doing together and (b) to get accustomed to the oscilloscope. You won't use the oscilloscope in every lab, but it will definitely help you out in some of them! Plus, it's an essential tool in experimental physics.

Oscilloscope 2

  • We learned about operation and function of the oscilloscope. Essentially how to set up the apparatus safley and how to use key concepts like measuring waveform voltages and phases, triggering, and some of the circuitry involved with the scope.

  • For my measurement of the fall time I used the cursor reading because Dr. Koch said it was more accurate: 49.6ms, as for the error because it was only an estimation and by eye, I would estimate this would have an error of at least 5ms. Initially I just took a quick glance at the cursor reading because I assumed the measurement function would be more accurate, but in comparison to the rest of the class my reading of the cursor was fairly competent.
  • I learned about the High and Low pass filters and ac and dc coupling, although I am still vague on these issues
  • The Lab actually took up the entire lab period, I played very little outside the realm of its coverage
  • I don't have any suggestions
