Purpose

  • Start making sample Silver film with proposed protocol

Procedure

  • 2.87g of AgNO3 was weighted out and placed in a 50mL Erylenmeyer flask.
  • 0.3g of Laponite clay was weighted out and placed in same Erlenmeyer flask as above.
  • The 2.87g of AgNO3 was calculated in the following ways:
Cationic exchange capacity of Laponite: 0.55 milliequivilient/gram
Weight % of silver to be exchanged in Clay: 95%
  Calculation is shown as follows:
  0.3 g LMT × (55 meqv/100 g LMT) × (1 mol Ag+/1000 meqv) × (107.86 g Ag+/1 mol Ag+) × (1 mol Ag+/1 mol AgNO3) × (1 mol AgNO3/169.87 g AgNO3) × 95% = 0.00009953 g AgNO3
  • 10mL of 50/50 water/ethanol solution was made by combining 5mL of water and 5mL of ethanol in a 10mL graduated cylinder.
  • 10mL of water/ethanol solution was poured into Erylenmeyer flask along with a stir bar.
  • The Erylenmeyer flask containing the solution is covered with aluminum foil and placed on stir plate under fume hood for 24 hours.

Observations

  • The clay and AgNO3 solution appeared white in color during stirring.
