Objectives

Today's objectives include the following:

  1. Continue testing the 30% Bentonite beads
  2. Test the 40% Bentonite beads
  3. Analyze UV Vis data for the 20% and 30% (dry) bentonite beads

Procedure

Testing the 30% and 40% sln bentonite beads
The 30% (sln) and 40% bentonite beads were tested using the same method as that from before.

Data analysis was performed for the UV Vis data collected from the 20% beads and the 30% dry bentonite beads.

Synthesis of 50% Bentonite beads
The synthesis of 50% bentonite beads was prepared using the same procedure from the 21st using the following reagents: 41.67mL of 3% by weight bentonite solution, 16.07mL of conc. HCL, 2.26mLs of DI water.

Observations

Table 1: Adsorption/desorption results of the 20% bentonite beads

Table 2: Adsorption/desorption results of the 30% dry bentonite beads

As shown by the results above, the 30% dry benontite beads had a much smaller capacity than the 20% bentonite beads. Since this is not what we would typically expect, we came to the conclusion that this could be due to using dry bentonite when making our beads instead of the 3% by wt solution. We can verify this hypothesis when we finish collecting the data for our 30% bentonite beads made with the solution.
