Bio
I emigrated to the U.S. from England in 1994, on my 14th birthday. I attended highschool in Edina Minneasota and went to the University of Chicago for my undergraduate degree. It was in Chicago, after working in the bowels of a transgenic mouse house, that I was side tracked by STS. I cobbled together a program in STS by combining history of science, anthropology, biology, chemistry, art and some philosophical type stuff. I also studied in South Africa and Rome. I graduated phi beta kappa (which is not, it turns out, a sorority). After college I worked for two years in a cell biology lab at Harvard Medical School Ruderman Lab where i refined my interests in anthropology of biology and picked up an interest in endocrine disruption. Since starting at MIT in 2005 I have written on various topics from Boston University's BSL4, the Irish Potato Famine, the Avian Flu and the history of the synthetic chemical industry. In keeping with my penchant for biological disasters I'm currently investigating the history of the synthetic chemical industy and the oil/gas industry focusing on the discovery of endocrine disruption. Recently i have begun enthnographic work with the Endocrine Disruption Exchange Network and Theo Colborn author of Our Stolen Future in Paonia, Colorado. I am also working with and funded by MIT's Program on Emerging Technologies. We are currently investigating the implications of ubiquitous computing and synthetic biology.
